Eurythmy West Midlands Campus

The Location

Eurythmy West Midlands (EWM) is based at the Glasshouse Arts Centre in Stourbridge, near Birmingham, in the heart of England.

This Arts Centre – with which we collaborate – is situated on the campus of the Glasshouse College, a Ruskin Mill Trust college for young people with learning difficulties and other special needs. This social enterprise offers a vibrant life of craft activities and cultural artistic events, which take place in the Ruskin Glass Centre and the refurbished Furnace Theatre of the Arts Centre (300 seats).

In Stourbridge one can find Elmfield School, a long-standing Steiner-Waldorf School, a Christian Community church, Elysia Therapeutic Centre and other social ventures.

From Stourbridge the bordering countryside of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Wales is within easy reach, including the towpaths of the extensive canal system in the area. The cultural life of Birmingham is a 25-minute train ride away; Shakespeare’s Stratford for day-trips.

The Venue

For the Eurythmy activities there are three studios available, as well as the theatre for rehearsals and performances.

Our students are able to join the (biodynamic and organic) College lunches for a specially reduced fee. Free hot drinks are always available. For any extra treats the café and organic shop in the Ruskin Glass Centre offers ample choice.

Help is offered for new students to find accommodation within the local community.

Activities at home and abroad

Eurythmy has been welcomed within this community from the start of Glasshouse College in 2000. In addition to Eurythmy Therapy, EWM contributes to the College life: regular contributions to festivals, joint projects with the Drama Department, and our own fairytale productions. Through this outreach activity, Eurythmy students – seen as role models – already gain experience in the social art of eurythmy. From this centre, the Eurythmy Stage Group working on contemporary relevant programmes, tours other Ruskin Mill centres and venues in Britain as well as public venues throughout Europe.

The Faculty

Maren Stott is the main Eurythmy tutor at the Eurythmy West Midlands campus. Together with other professionals, she leads the activities on offer there.

Eurythmy Diploma, Nuremberg; MA Performing Arts, Alanus University. Performed and toured UK and Europe with ‘Ashdown Eurythmy’; taught in the ‘London School of Eurythmy’, performing with ‘London Eurythmy Stage Group’; directed the Eurythmy in Rudolf Steiner’s Mystery Plays for ‘Portal Productions’ which toured Britain, Europe and USA. Taught at ‘Eurythmy West Midlands’, Stourbridge since 1991.

Artistic work includes: Ensemble works with ‘Anderida Ensemble’ (festivals and outreach); ‘Eurythmy Ensemble Kosmos’ (emphasis on contemporary music); ‘Moving Tales’ (stories and fairytales); Bach’s ‘Chaconne’ (with Prof. Paul Robertson, leader of Medici Quartet); Britten’s ‘Metamorphoses’ with Jinny Shaw (oboe); toured Europe, New Zealand with ‘Water Islands’ with Geoffrey Norris (speech and acting) and Alan Stott (piano). Prof. Nigel Osborne and Prof. Howard Skempton have written compositions for her. 2018 member of the Goetheanum Stage Ensemble. Since 2012 Artistic Director of the Young Stage Group, Eurythmy West Midlands. Has given numerous seminars and courses: throughout Europe, the Far East and North America.

Alan Stott

Musician and Anthroposophical Studies

Alan Stott (B.Ed.), music and anthroposophical studies; trained at Dartington College of Arts; piano with the accompanist Dr. Ferdinand Rauter (London, founder of the Anglo- Austrian Music Society), later with Robert Kolben (Munich).

Co-founder of the Bristol Waldorf School. Worked as a pianist for eurythmy at the Waldorfschule am Krähewald, Stuttgart; Eurythmy School and Eurythmy Stage Group, Munich; Eurythmy School, Nuremberg; London Eurythmy School; Emerson College & Michael Hall School, Forest Row; Ashdown Eurythmy; founded Anderida Ensemble.

Toured extensively in central and western Europe, USA, Canada, the Ukraine, Egypt, the Far East and New Zealand. Translator of works on Eurythmy and music, including Rudolf Steiner’s GA’s on Eurythmy.

Initiated the ‘Collected Works of Prof. Hermann Beckh’. Literary and musical editor; contributions to church music, songs, choral works, a piano cycle and instrumental pieces.

Musical projects, Eurythmy programmes & seminars. Music for fairy-tales. Researched Bach with Prof. Paul Robertson (violin); ‘Water-Islands’ with Maren Stott (eurythmy) and Geoffrey Norris (speech). Prof. Nigel Osborne and Prof. Howard Skempton have composed for the duo Maren & Alan Stott. Regular duo recitals with Robert Davey (cello) and other musicians.
